What to Engrave on a Wedding or Anniversary Cutting Board
By the Naked Wood Works shop, Pryor, Oklahoma · September 2026
For a wedding or anniversary cutting board, engrave the couple’s first names, their shared last name or last-name initial, and the wedding date. Those three things stay true for the life of the board, and every wedding and anniversary design we make in Pryor, Oklahoma is built around some mix of them.
The core three
First names. Almost every wedding board includes both first names. They make the board specific to the couple rather than just the family.
Last name or initial. The shared last name can be written out in full or reduced to a single large initial. A traditional couple’s monogram uses the last-name initial as the large center letter, with the first-name initials on either side. Many of our designs combine the two: a large initial with the full last name running through or under it, as on the Split Letter Monogram Cutting Board.
The date. The wedding date anchors the board to the occasion. For an anniversary gift, most couples still want the wedding date rather than the anniversary year, because it stays correct forever.
Picking a layout
Once you know what to engrave, the design decides how it looks. A few directions:
- Circle monogram. Names, initial, last name and date arranged in a ring. The Circle Monogram Family Name Cutting Board is our most familiar version and fits a lot of information in a tidy space.
- Bold last name. The last name in large capitals, first names in script and the date underneath. The Bold Last Name Anniversary Cutting Board is readable from across a room.
- Minimal. Just the two first names in one line of script with a small “est.” year. The Script Names and Year Cutting Board suits couples who prefer a quiet look.
- Decorative. The Flourish Circle Last Name Board wraps the last name in a ring with scroll flourishes, with first names above and the date below.

Getting the names right
Names are the easiest thing to get wrong. Before you order:
- Confirm spelling. Check with the couple, a wedding website or the invitation. Nicknames and legal names often differ.
- Confirm the last name. Not every couple changes names. Some hyphenate, some combine, some keep their own.
- Decide the order. Alphabetical, the order the couple uses themselves, or a traditional order. Any is fine as long as it is intentional.
- For a surprise gift, ask a close friend or family member rather than guessing.
Formatting the date
Choose a style that matches the design:
- Full numeric, such as 06.14.2025, is compact and fits monogram layouts.
- Written out, such as June 14, 2025, feels more formal and suits larger script designs.
- Year only, often with “Est.” in front, is the simplest and pairs well with family name boards.
Double-check the date against the invitation. It is easy to be one day off when a wedding ran past midnight or when the couple eloped before the reception.
Adding a line of text
A short line can make a board more personal. Keep it under about eight words so it stays legible. Ideas that work:
- A year count for an anniversary, such as “10 years.”
- A place, such as the city where they married.
- A short phrase they use, or a line from their vows.
Long quotes and poems get small fast. If the words matter more than the names, a design built around text is the better choice, like the Family Recipe Cutting Board, which lays out a full recipe in script.
Size and wood affect what fits
Our boards come in 8x12 in and 10x14 in at 0.75 in thick, 12x16 in at 1.5 in thick, and 16x24 in walnut at 1.5 in thick. On an 8x12, stick to the core three. On 10x14 and up there is room for an extra line. Fine script engraves with more contrast on maple than walnut; our maple vs. walnut guide explains why.
Check your spelling before checkout
We engrave your names and date exactly as you type them, so the order form is your proof. Read every letter. Say the names out loud. Check the date against a calendar. Once the laser runs, the wood cannot be un-engraved, so checkout is the moment to get it right. Each board is then made to order in 3-5 business days. Logo orders are different: for those we email a free digital proof before we engrave.
If the board is for a 5th anniversary, our 5th anniversary gift guide has more on timing and choosing a size.
